It’s a Dutch tradition called “dropping.” The New York Times recently reported about how some parents in the Netherlands gather groups of pre- or young teens, drive them into the woods at night, hand them a GPS, and tell them to find their way back. For safety’s sake an adult or two will trail them, but other than that, the kids have to rely on themselves and each other to get back to camp.
Clearly the Dutch aren’t into helicopter parenting. As one mom said, “You just drop your kids into the world. Of course, you make sure they don’t die, but other than that, they have to find their own way.”
There’s a lot to like about this concept, and it applies to their faith too. Too many students have no idea of the worldview challenges they’ll face in college. That’s why they need practice… for some help, check out the book “A Practical Guide to Culture.”
